What you will learn
A USCG Maritime Security Course educates mariners on threat detection, prevention, and response by teaching them the importance of: access control, surveillance, duties, and plans.
The goal of these courses is to enhance overall security knowledge and awareness to prevent threats before they occur.

Why are Maritime Security Courses important?
Maritime security courses are vital for safeguarding the global maritime industry against a range of threats, including terrorism, piracy, and other illegal activities. They equip personnel with the essential knowledge and skills to implement effective security measures, respond to incidents, and comply with international regulations like the ISPS Code. By fostering a culture of security awareness and preparedness, these courses directly contribute to the safety of life at sea, the protection of assets, and the uninterrupted flow of international trade.

A Maritime Security Awareness course is designed to educate mariners on how to detect, mitigate, and respond to potential security threats. The Sea School Maritime Security Awareness course focuses on classroom lecture and discussion but does not do any hands-on response training.
All mariners and personnel involved in maritime operations (including those in ports and facilities), who are not assigned specific security duties but are affected by the ISPS Code, Maritime Security Act, or similar regulations, are required to take Maritime Security Awareness courses.
Contact the maritime training school you are interested in to learn more about their Maritime Security Awareness courses. The Sea School’s course does NOT have students participate in any hands-on training.
The Sea School offers Maritime Security courses at five (5) of our brick and mortar locations. You can register here for a course that works best with your schedule. You can also find a list of approved courses on the NMC website under the “Approved Courses” tab. Upon completion of the course, mariners receive a Course Completion Certificate that they must submit alongside a USCG application for official certification. It is important to note that a Course Completion Certification is NOT a substitute for the official USCG STCW credential.
Typical topics include understanding maritime security threats, relevant international and national regulations (like the ISPS Code), security levels, access control procedures, recognizing suspicious activities, emergency response, and the duties and responsibilities of security personnel.
